Because before Anika Noni Rose there was yooouuu in the original Broadway cast of Dreamgirls as Lorrell Robinson. Of course, I wasn't old enough to make up to New York to see that her perform. However I was gay enough to pick up the soundtrack for my mama as Mother's Day gift. I managed to "borrow" it from her on a long term basis, based on the fact that I had more than a few favorite tracks on there. One of my favorites was Devine's divine and gritty take on "Ain't No Party" "Sitting home waiting on a man who ain't comin' ain't no party. No. No. No." Words to live by.

Dirty Laundry

Because I watched Dirty Laundry last night. It is a familiar story. It's a bit over the top at times and the story is a familiar one; Prodigal returns home to the South, learns a little more about himself and regains an appreciation for life. But the movie has it's fair share of twist that make it a fresh take rather than hackneyed. The main twist is the fact that prodigal son (played by Rock) is gay man compelled to go home after discovering that he's fathered a child. ANother refreshing twist is the fact his hometown of Paris, Georgia is peopled by a population of saintly and magical negroes offering him an easy answer like "Come to Jesus" to set his life right. Along with him, they have their fair share of problems, including his mother Evelyn (played by Loretta Devine). Devine manages to walk a fine line and gives genuine humanity to character who could've easily came off as either simply maudlin or monstorous.

Reminiscing about Madonna's Truth or Dare made me think back on poor Sharon who appeared in the documentary and did hair on the Blonde Ambition tour. On the New York leg of the tour, she was apparently drugged, assaulted and robbed. It's been awhile since I've seen the film (just found out I can instantly watch it on Netflix!), but I've watched it enough to remember her name. So I googled her and I'm glad to see that she's doing quite well. She's working with the likes of famed photographer Dave LaChappelle (slightly not NSFW, but definitely worth looking at when you get a chance.) behind and in front of the camera and doing her thing behind the scenes on the runway.

I wasn't hip to Adele until my neighbor mystique posted clips from Mark Ronson's performance at Brit Awards and she was one of his featured performers, but every since then she's been on the radar. So I was happy to hear the news today (via SOULBOUNCE.COM) that her album "19" is set drop stateside this summer. Until then, being that I'm woefully cheap and refuse to drop $30 for an import, I'll be enjoying clips like the following one on YouTube.

BOW DOWN!

I know it's been awhile since I've done on of the these. So maybe I should change Big Girl Love of the Week(BGLOW) to Big Girl Love of the Bi-Monthly (BGLOB). Then again, no. And I know that Re-re is is a repeat (kinda like that curtain and key lime gown combo she wore to the Kennedy Centers Honors and then to the Grammy Awards), but she needs a little love after all the hell she went through last week. First she got into a tangle with Beyonce and nem. And then PETA decided to hop on top on the dog pile, take her to task for wearing furs and crack a few fat jokes. You do you, Auntie Rere. To hell with the haters.

Denise Martin was born and raised in Revere, Massachusetts. She attended Revere High School, Class of 1985. She spent one year at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and then attended Wentworth Institute of Technology, where she received a certificate in Technical School/Telecommunication Electronics. Martin rides her scooter to her job as a lunch lady for fourth through seventh graders. This involves preparing and serving lunch, along with cleaning the kitchen, five days a week. She previously worked as a short-order cook and a central office technician for a phone company. She also operated and maintained a video game route at eight different colleges, repairing and maintaining video games and juke boxes. Martin is a Second Degree Black Belt in American Kenpo Karate. She is a student at Revere Karate Academy in Revere. She recently opened her own karate school, Douglas Karate Club. She is a member of the International Kenpo Karate Association. Her hobbies include collecting Budweiser memorabilia, axe and knife throwing, stick fighting, and playing sports with her three daughters. She is an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan; she even named her dachshund Tedy Bruschi K9. She describes herself as competitive, outgoing, strong-willed and determined. Martin currently resides in Douglas, Massachusetts with her husband of 16 years, Robert. They have three daughters, Erin, 13; Emily, 10; and Samantha, 9. Her birth date is May 5, 1967.

Because I felt the pain she felt, when she was left out of last week's reward challenge and it brought back memories of being the last one picked for school yard games.

Because never in my life have I entertained the idea of being a thirty something white woman with a mullet and hell of a work ethic, until James declared that Denise, a fellow workhorse, was the kind of woman he could see himself with if she were a bit younger and he were a bit older.

First I find out the Chinese are mucking up my chocolate. Now I find out from an article in Thursday's Washington Post they're fucking with my fat people! :

Discrimination against the obese is inevitable, Wang said: "It's how society is now. Employers have countless choices. They can easily turn down a fat person and choose a better-looking one."

And if that wasn't enough, obesity can also keep you out of college in China. I guess that is the country's way of making their obese invisible. However the four women of Qian Jin Zu He are making themselves seen on stages across the country and doing their part to counter discrimination.

Man Hoping to Adopt Has Gastric Bypass in Dallas

A Missouri man hopes that getting gastric bypass surgery in Dallas will help him in his quest to adopt his foster child.

Gary Stocklaufer, who weighs 550 pounds, underwent gastric bypass surgery at Renaissance Hospital on Friday.

The operation ended at noon and was a success, according to the hospital.

Stocklaufer captured national attention when a judge told him he was too obese to adopt.
