Yesterday was Beatrice "Bea" Arthur's 86th birthday!

Long before I had dreams of becoming Carrie Bradshaw (and eventually let them go.Thankfully because me and my big head couldn't work this type of whimsy. You know, unless I found a Mulefa seedpod and hot glue-gunned a Tualapi to it.* Viola!), my talismanic TV lady idol was that mother-loving and no-nonsense taking Dorothy Zbornak. I was just like her. The tall one. The sensible one. The one with the soft spot for yutzes and the deep voice. There quite a few, but here is one of my favorite Golden Girls' moment featuring Bea.

And here's a bonus clip. No clue where it's from but with Bea, Madame (!) Melba Moore (!) and Rock Hudson declaring he's been "down low," it doesn't get any gayer than this!

Dreamgirls "We Are A Family" 1986 Bea Arthur! Nell Carter!

Music from Dreamgirls, Nell Carter, Bea (nee Beatrice) Arthur, Marla Gibbs (overlooking that hideous top. It was the eighties!), Edna Garrett, and Punky Brewster! This is like the perfect storm of fabulousness. If the picture and sound weren't out of sync, I may have weeped at its brilliance. What in the hell happened to the spectacle of television fall preview specials? Nowadays, we only get the cast of The Office or Two and a Half Men offering sneak peaks at the new seasons. Bring back the extravaganzas!

Bea Arthur, puppets and Melba Moore. If my church was anything like this I may have stayed there. I ain't gonna even say nothing about Rock Hudson confessing to be on the Down Low. A man ahead of his time that one.
